I second the recommendation for Avast Link

After the scan process re-enable system restore, also if you need to save space later you can let windows delete all but the most recent restore point- disk cleanup-clik on "more options" tab,at the bottom of the little window look for "system restore" clean up, quick way to find disk clean up is right clik on c drive and then clik on properties, let the clean up scan then the window will appear where the more options tab is

You think is'nt good enough, install Adaware by lavasoft ,spybot-S&D ,Windows defender-which has real time scanning, update them all then rescan if nothing is uncovered you should be fine

...and pick up some more malware in the process.

If you can't afford to purchase an AV program go with the free Avast mentioned above.  You don't need to resort to stealing software to stay protected.

If you are using Internet Explorer, try Firefox or Opera, and you should see a marked drop in spyware that gets on your system.

If you have had Norton AV installed and want to switch to a different AV, you should run this tool to remove all traces of Norton.  It has a tendency to leave parts of itself installed all over you system.

You think is'nt good enough
Sounds like my wife.

Listen to the peeps.
AVAST
SPYBOT
ADAWARE

AND, IF YOU WANT..SPYWAREBLASTER. This is not a scan for stuff, but you run it while browsing and it 'prevents' adware and spyware from loading. Safe, good, and free.

You might also consider the free versions of ZoneAlarm or WinPatrol. The first is added firewall security and both will alert you of programs that are trying to install secretly or tryting to hijack your 'start-up' list. Both free, safe and good. (I actually run both. Spybot also has a TeaTimer that will do the same with things trying to get into your start-ups and/or reset your registry)

Most importantly, again...the first three. Do it. Now. Don't wait and stop looking for stuff that is better, or listening to ANYONE who drives a white VW with a silly logo on the side.

Chances are you have progs like kazzaa etc installed if so the best advice i can give is reformat and start again, any software you want to install must come from trusted sites such as CNet,there are also articles at cnet on combatting spyware and free lessons

EDIT: Also what smedley said for a free two way firewall and you must have one activated before re-connecting to the net after a reformat, and go directly to microsoft update before anywhere else

If you want my opion, go download HijackThis http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html Do the scan save and copy the log. then go here http://www.techguy.org/ and tell them your problem, make sure you post the Hijack log when you start the new thread.

Go here to search your running tasks and start up proggies...answersthatwork.com http://www.answersthatwork.com/ It's not software but an awesome site that lists just about everything and tells you what they are, if you need them and how to deactivate what should be deactivated. (WinPatrol is great for managing your start ups and it's free..allowing you to disable and remove some. It's also great to have when certain things freeze up and you can't close them...WinPatrol lists all active tasks and allows you to shut them down)
